For the love of sugar

sugar

Sugar. We love it, crave it and many of us (me) seem to never get enough of it. Its a human vice that crosses cultural economic and national divides. For the love of sugar, europeans enslaved millions of africans. For the love of sugar diabetics are dying and losing limbs. For the love of sugar obesity has torn through society like a plague.

We love sugar so what the hell is the issue, why is this a problem? Well I had no Idea of the detrimental affects of sugar until hearing some things that prompted me to ask the same question. I looked around a little bit and there where many sources just waiting to let me know why I should stop eating my sour patch kids of which I can never have just a few. But here is the crux… this is the nature of my sweet lover. She is as addictive as opiates, literally! Causing the release of some of the same chemicals in the brain.

What I found was actually not too far from obvious once I thought about it. Sugar is fuel to the human body. endogenous processes break down our food into its components and then use the sugar this way anyway. This is why sugar can give one that wired feeling. That feeling is due to the blood sugar spike produced by food and drinks that offer it up as one of the main ingredients. Because our bodies know this ingredient to be fuel we want more. I have seen it blamed on the fact that for much of human existence we didn’t have this grocery store lifestyle that we are use to. We where never sure where the next fuel source was going to come from so when you got some you better make it count. But now its all readily available so we just grow fatter as opposed to living off the extra calories for a while until the next meal.

The addictive quality of sugar coupled with the detrimental affects are what make it such a problem. Sugar can be like food for disease. MANY of the nastiest disease causing organisms are anaerobic meaning they hate oxygen… more than that, it spells death for them. While our healthy cells love oxygen but you don’t need me to tell you that. Simply put, sugar doesn’t promote an oxygen rich internal environment. Proof of this is observable in fermentation the anaerobic process that turns sugar into alcohol. Ok remember what I said about our “healthy cells”? Sugar, has also been linked to cancer which is really just unhealthy cells. In fact I know from experience that when someone gets a cancer diagnosis the doctor forbids sugar. Proving they know this which begs the question why is this information not given to people all the time but thats another topic.

So this all means sugar is evil but I believe everything is made up of both good and evil its our actions that tip things one way or the other. The key is moderation, have 2 or 3 Oreos instead of the whole package. Get the small bag of Sour Patch Kids instead of the honking one in my case. Have a piece of fruit instead, that way the sugar is teamed up with all kinds of nutritious goodness. Cinnamon and tomatoes are just two foods that combat sugar cravings. Honey, succant, agave nectar, and pure cane are all better choices as added sweeteners. Think the less processed/refined the better for you it will be. Speaking of which, white pasta, white rice, white bread and just about any refined grain product turn to sugar almost immediately upon breakdown in the GI tract. Producing the same blood sugar spike as many foods that taste sugary. Instead opt for whole grain versions such as wild rice and whole wheat pasta.

Demystifying GMOs

GMOs are kind of a hot topic lately with all of the fights throughout the country to make labeling mandatory. People know that they are nasty little somethings that for some reason everybody hates. But do most of us know what they are? Probably not and if my conversations with people are any indication then this is definitely true.

Genetically Modified Organisms are organisms that have had there DNA altered in a laboratory. Genes are inserted into an organisms DNA with the purpose of producing desired characteristics when the DNA is transcribed, the stage when cells are produced and the organism becomes the organism.

The term includes all organisms with genetic modifications, but in the current context what we are usually referring to is food crops. Surely there has been much experimentation with GM animals but as of now there reportedly are none currently being used for food. Soy beans, corn, peanuts and papaya are a few of the more common GM crops. But one must consider the reality of how much a product like corn is used. High fructose corn syrup is an ingredient in a shocking number of products in your grocery store. In things you might suspect such as soft drinks and cookies to things less obvious like your loaf of bread!

Although genetically modified have become dirty words, the crops are designed to do things such as grow more aggressively or more resilient. This could have been great for humanitarian and rehabilitation efforts for those in need and that may have been the idea behind the experimentation that produced the first ever GMO. But like other scientific/medical breakthroughs information and procedures are privatized and positioned to make a select few more rich inside US borders.

What seems to me the most obvious issue with GM foods is that we are organisms as well. We also have DNA and no one can assure us that these modified genes are not interacting with our own DNA in meaningful ways. Concern has been raised about the possibility of gene transfer to our DNA and to the DNA of bacteria in the GI tract… yikes. In theory they can provoke unexpected allergic reaction through allergenic genes from other organisms. The flavr savr tomato, first GM food released for human consumption in 1994 was banned after its developers raised concerns over its carcinogenic properties.

There are also serious environmental concerns such as contamination of conventional crops and gene transfer. The most sinister part of this is that GM food seed distributer Monsanto has sued a canadian farmer after finding their genetically modified crop in his field because they own patents to seeds which can blow for miles and scatter with the wind. The fact of the matter is that the family farm has been disappearing while the prevalence of monoculture factory farms has grown. because of subsidies based on certain crops such as corn, there is incentive for a struggling farmer to produce as much as possible. But different plants extract different nutrients from soil, this is why conventionally grown gardens must switch crops from time to time. Guess how they manage to keep these crops going? With synthetic nutrients produced by Monsanto.

The final piece to the puzzle is the revolving door between monsanto and the FDA. Michael Taylor deputy commissioner of foods was a monsanto lawyer and is just one example of several shared employees between the two. I don’t know about anyone else but a corporation owning patents on seeds that have become the major food crops and the method to keeping them growing while its bored members and associates hold government offices makes me super nervous. There is now more airtight way to control people then by controlling the food supply.

The possible connection to GM foods and cancer is enough to make me outraged about the fact they are all over my grocery store like land mines. But the connections between a corporation like Monsanto and the US government are chilling because one has to think… what is there to be gained from the relationships that obviously exist.

Welcome

Hello friends and welcome to my new web home. For those of you who visited my old site this is definitely fleshed out. More pages for more varied content.  I’m so excited to be able to share more of the things I want to share!!! ok now that I got that out of my system… let’s move right along

My favorite feature of this new design is that my blog will be front and center. Updates happenings and all the yummy info will featured right on the first page. I couldn’t make that happen before and it was driving me nuts. The best part is the switch saves me time, this host has an app! Furthermore I’m one person… I don’t need a business website.

Like the old one the feel of this site will be very organic. Think of it like coming to hang out with me for a while. I wouldn’t sit and talk to you about one thing every time you came over. I’m a complex person like everyone else dammit! Many interests and many things I want to say… and sometimes nothing to say. They say silence is golden.

I will be sharing info about massage and how to get one from me of course. There will be tips and information about nutrition and wellness. Recipes, news items and whatever else I feel the urge to share. So stay tuned, keep stopping by maybe you will be inspired by something and really that’s what this is all about for me.

Peace and ❤❤
